About me

Kevin G Baker graduated with a first class degree in Theoretical Mechanics in 1978 and joined British Aerospace as a Systems Engineer. He worked initially as a control systems engineer on the Ulysses deep space probe, then later as a spacecraft systems engineer on a variety of satellite development projects throughout the 1980s.

In 1992 he transferred to Project Management, and was the project manager of many of the electrical and mechanical subsystems on the large European environmental satellite, Envisat. From 1996 to 1998 he was project manager of the international team responsible for the Microwave Humidity Sounder meteorological instrument, now flying on the European Metop and US NOAA satellites.

In 1998 he was appointed as Programmes & Commercial Manager in the Earth Observation & Science Business Unit of Astrium. In this role he had accountability for the P&L of the various space-based projects in the Business Unit.

In 2000 he transferred to Airbus UK as Head of Engineering Projects. His responsibilities comprised the suite of wing engineering development projects on the various Airbus aircraft programmes of the time – A380 and A400M as well as the engineering support to the ongoing serial programmes and to the in-service fleet.

From 2005 to 2007 he was Programme Manager for the A320 Family in Airbus UK, responsible for the production, associated procurement and delivery of the wings, landing gear and fuel systems for the A320 Family aircraft, which at that time was in production at a rate of around 30 [per month].

He is currently in Airbus HQ in Toulouse as VP, Centre of Competence for Project & Programme Management. This organisation has been created to develop, promote and deploy project management practices across all Airbus activities. His specific activities comprise the transnational deployment of harmonised ways-of-working, and the leadership of his team of some 300 project management staff supporting the various Airbus programmes.

This varied career has given Mr Baker experience in project and programme management in a wide variety of aerospace domains – as prime contractor and sub-contractor, on development activities and serial [steady-state] activities, within the varied spacecraft domain and the highly complex aircraft domain. Mr Baker has also had experience in managing software projects, and civil engineering construction projects

Mr Baker is a Fellow of the Association of Project Management, and a qualified PRINCE2 practitioner. He is an occasional speaker at external conferences, and a regular guest lecturer at the MBA module at the University of West of England, UK.
