John Donohoe has 30-plus years of experience developing IT systems in various roles. He has lived in the US, Canada, Belgium, Tokyo and for more than 20 years, has called Frankfurt home.
As the Director of the Star Alliance PMO, John’s initial interest was improving project governance and project management maturity. He applied quality principles from the likes of Deming and a process maturity framework based upon CMMI. He saw that improving project management processes alone were not sufficient. In 2012 he implemented an agile approach to complement the waterfall project management methodology.
For the past two years his focus and passion has been helping Star Alliance better execute its strategy via portfolio management. John takes a holistic view of executing strategy with the PMO as a key partner in the overall process. Like the Star Alliance PMO, many PMOs are uniquely positioned, because they often sit between the project demand side (portfolio) and the project supply side (resource utilization). One of the main reasons for failed implementation of strategy is the disconnection between strategy formulation and implementation. John will share his experience on what he calls a Strategic Project Management Office (SPMO), the bridge between strategy formulation and strategy implementation.
He has given presentations at several conferences on PMO agile implementation, executing strategy and portfolio management. He serves on the executive board of Toastmaster’s Frankfurt chapter.
